Jenson Button has told McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh: I want to sign for another year.

A day after his brilliant drive in Belgium where he stormed through the field from 19th to take third, Frome flier Button urged his team principal to take up the option in his contract of another year.

Jenson Button said: "All Whitmarsh has to do is say yes, and I will say yes because I want to be here next year. It's up to the team as to when they approach me, but for me I'm the happiest I've been with the car."

Of the top four teams — McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes — Button, 31, is the only driver without a guaranteed seat for next season

Silverstone bosses hope to sign off plans for a major redevelopment plan of the home of the British Grand Prix on Friday, as they continue a push to find investors.

With the second phase of Silverstone's redevelopment - focused around the new £28 million 'wing' pits and paddock complex - now complete, attention is shifting to a wider update that will include hotels, a new kart track, music arenas, car showrooms and experience centres.

The board of Silverstone Circuit hopes to approve the scheme at a meeting ahead of the British Grand Prix, before it is then sent to the local authorities over the next few weeks for approval. It is hoped that the plans can then be signed off fully later this year.

Before the plans can progress, however, Silverstone's owner, the British Racing Drivers' Club, needs to find investors to fund the project.

Silverstone's managing director Richard Phillips said: "It won't happen overnight and it will require funding.

Sebastien Vettel claimed a 22nd pole position in his short F1 career after topping the charts in qualifying for the European GP in Valencia.

The Red Bull driver was the only man to dip under one minute 37 seconds for the street race with team-mate Mark Webber qualifying second-fastest late in the session.

Lewis Hamilton will share the second row with the Ferraro of Fernando Alonso while Alonso's team-mate Felipe Massa edged out the second McLaren of Jenson Button on the third row.

Mark Webber nearly lost his battle with the elements at Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix when his car started changing gear on its own.

The Red Bull ace was attempting to cope with the torrential rain that swamped the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve when water invaded his cockpit area.

Webber knew he was in for a rough ride when his F1 ride started making its own decisions.

He said: "The car was downshifting itself.”

"There was water that had got into the steering wheel so that had to be changed at one of the pits stops."

Although Aston Martin seem to have some difficulty in the development of the new AMR-One, the withdrawal of the Honda of Highcroft Racing will allow the Lola-Aston Martin coupé to appear in La Sarthe on the 11th and 12th June. It carved out a remarkable series of successes under the legendary blue and orange colours of Gulf Oil in 2009 and 2010.

In 2009, it won in its first season in the Le Mans Series., with two victories in five races. Aston Martin Racing Team won the LM P1 classification with Tomas Enge, Stefan Mücke and Jan Charouz driving. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the same trio had a superb fourth place that year behind two Peugeot 908 HDi FAP and an Audi R15. Seven time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi achieved his first major milestone as a Ducati rider by taking a debut Desmosedici podium in Sunday's French Grand Prix at Le Mans.

Ninth on the grid and sixth at the end of the first lap, Rossi spent the first half of the race just behind a battle for fourth between Yamaha's world champion Jorge Lorenzo and Repsol Honda's Andrea Dovizioso.

Just as Rossi passed Dovizioso for fifth, an incident ahead of them between Dani Pedrosa and Marco Simoncelli meant the trio would soon be battling for the final two places on the podium. Rossi rose to the occasion, overtaking Dovizioso and then former team-mate Lorenzo - the 2011 points leader - with four laps to go. But Dovizioso also got past the #1 and later wrestled second place away from Rossi by just 0.35sec.
